Scrubs & Beyond stores are closing: Clothing retailer says all locations will shutter, offers no explanation

The apparel industry is no stranger to store closures, and this week another retailer has joined the ranks of those shuttering stores.

Healthcare clothing company Scrubs & Beyond has announced that it will close all of its stores, which include more than 100 locations across 30 states. Here’s what you need to know about the store closures.

What is Scrubs & Beyond?

Scrubs & Beyond is a specialty clothing retailer that sells healthcare apparel for medical professionals—doctors and nurses who work in hospitals and healthcare offices across the country.

According to its website, Scrubs & Beyond says it is the largest retail provider of healthcare apparel and accessories in America. It has been in operation for more than 20 years. In 2013, it acquired two other professional uniform companies, Uniform City and Life Uniform.

Private equity merger

In March 2022, private equity firm LKCM Headwater Investments merged Scrubs & Beyond with three other uniform companies—Chefwear, Landau, and White Cross—to form Kindthread, an overarching parent company of the four uniform retailers.

In October of that year, Kindthread announced a completely revamped retail and online experience for Scrubs & Beyond, which included “an elevated and modernized in-store experience,” according to a company press release.

“The scale of Scrubs & Beyond, and its importance to our family of brands, enables us to bring about a positive change in the retail experience for an incredibly important group of people – healthcare professionals,” Kindthread CEO David Murphy said at the time.

But fast-forward less than four years later, and now Scrubs & Beyond has abruptly announced it is closing all its retail stores.

Why is Scrubs & Beyond closing its retail stores?

Neither Scrubs & Beyond nor its parent company, Kindthread, has publicly stated why it chose to close all its retail stores.

The announcement of Scrubs & Beyond’s store closures was made on the retailer’s website, which simply stated “All Retail Stores Closing” in a banner across the top of the site.

The chain says it is offering 20% to 40% off all products in its retail stores nationwide.

Based on the language on the store’s website, it is unclear whether Scrubs & Beyond’s online operations will also cease. It is also unclear how many employees will be affected by the nationwide store closures.

A customer service line for Scrubs & Beyond was disconnected and no longer in service when called by Fast Company on Wednesday.

On the Scrubs & Beyond Instagram account, a number of customers have complained recently that they ordered merchandise from the brand but never received it.

Scrubs & Beyond’s website states that it currently has more than 115 stores in 30 states.
