Cool Crutches – Amelia Peckham

When Amelia suffered a spinal injury which left her partially paralysed from the waist down, it felt like her life had been flipped upside down. After a period of recovery, she found herself facing a life reliant on walking aids, but the uncomfortable and noisy NHS crutches provided for her felt like more of a hinderance than support.

That’s where the idea for Cool Crutches was born, and with help from her mother, Clare, they researched and designed the first pair, offering a strong, comfortable and customisable alternative to standard crutches.

Since then, Cool Crutches has gone on to help thousands of people living with injuries and conditions improve their lifestyle, with the Cool Walking Stick launching in 2019. The company works with charities such as Physionet to refurbish pre-loved walking aids and distribute them across over 22 countries, including Ukraine and Syria.

With Cool Crutches, Amelia has created a community that allows people with life-long disabilities to share their experiences and show the world that they don’t have to hold you back.

What are your plans for the future of Cool Crutches?

“We have recently launched children’s crutches and the response has been incredible so we will continue to develop our range mobility aids and accessories to support long term conditions and disabilities, as well as making them accessible and available to as many people as possible. Through expanding overseas as well as into wholesale, we have big plans!”

What would your advice be to those who wanted to set up a business?

“Go for it! Finding a solution to a problem you’ve experienced is a fantastic start, it’s easy to feel nervous and overwhelmed but really there is no perfect time to start you just have to give it a go and be prepared to learn along the way. You will be better at it than you think!”
